I think that the real problem is that people don’t know themselves. When we are externally focused (including on helping others to feel good about ourselves), we lose track of our essence. When we know and integrate our parts, we become more inclusive and compassionate externally, and we feel naturally driven to “help” other. This doesn’t come from a sense of superiority or “I’m good,” but from a true passion.
