Hi Chaitra,

I realized that I wasn’t sure what “consciousness” actually referred to, so I checked. According to Wikiepdia, “Consciousness is the state or quality of awareness or of being aware of an external object or something within oneself.” So, this is just the state of being aware. There is no subject/object split in reality, so not only is awareness illusory, but the “state” of being aware is illusory. If there is no awareness, then nothing can be aware.

I wouldn’t say that “awareness = consciousness + ego.” I don’t think there is such a thing as ego. What people seem to refer to as ego is simply what seems to be happening (e.g. thoughts, feelings, reactions, preferences) being mis-construed by the illusion of self as being about someone and for someone.
