Absolutely. Yep, lots of evidence that the sense of self is illusory. I don’t think it’s needed for evolutionary survival though. Most people’s sense of self, or their consciousness, drops away frequently and they perform and survive more effectively when it does. The brain functioning that enables a sense of self seems to have evolved for other purposes, such as planning. The sense of self, or what we conflate with an idea of consciousness, seems to be an unfortunate side-effect.
